BEYOND TIME

Solo exhibition focusing on calligraphy, exploring spiritual transformation through ritual & prayer - c.2022

“In 2022 I opened my solo exhibition Beyond Time, a collection of works focused on calligraphy, featuring painting, sculpture, and installation. The works explored the transformational seasons of life and the process of nurturing a relationship with a higher spiritual power.

At the start of the year I chose to focus primarily on calligraphy-based work. In my practice I am in constant pursuit of uninhibited creative flow as well as technical mastery. My personal evolution began to steer me further away from the illustrative/figurative work I became known for, and towards calligraphy.

This avenue has allowed me to create freely and experiment with materials in new ways. While the calligraphy work began in a formal and traditional framework, it eventually released into a myriad of expressions and became simply painting. With this I’ve begun to prioritize how I write and the sensory language I communicate – feeling, over legibility to the viewer.”

“Japanese avant-garde calligrapher Yūichi Inuoe’s monumental characters and Chinese contemporary calligrapher Wang Dongling’s chaos script were major influences on this show. Both of these artists, while trained in traditional methods of calligraphy practice, broke from those formulas to create unique forms of expression. I found myself in a similar space.”

Oh yes, it’s on from here on out.
Put your hands in the atmosphere if you know what I’m talking about.

“Experimentation was the driving force of this series, as I began to discover a new direction and understanding of what a focus in text-based painting could mean for my work. While ink, brush, and paper are the foundations of my study, mixed materials and applications breathed new life into the possibilities for my calligraphy.

The title Beyond Time refers to the re-contextualization of traditional practices through a metamorphosis of methodology.”
