The Jade Forest is now open!
You are invited to a seat at the table for the very first tea session of the year hosted by Rising Red Lotus. In celebration of the occasion, our featured tea will be the treasured Da Hong Pao, a rock oolong from the Wuyi mountains of Fujian, China .
Big Red Robe, or “Da Hong Pao”, is the holy grail of Wuyi oolongs. There are only a handful of mother trees in existence, producing scant kilograms of tea each year. Very rarely does this tea make it to the open market, but when it does, auction values can reach $900,000 per kilogram, as in 1998.
This session’s selection has been carefully sourced from tea trees that are the closest in genetic make-up to these rare mother trees. This batch was harvested in the Spring of 2016 and is of exceptional quality.
The initial brew releases the intense toffee and caramel notes from the charcoal roasting, but you may find the complex fruity notes that emerge in later infusions to be equally, if not more captivating.
After several steepings of this tea has opened your senses the session will conclude with a tasting of a 12 year aged Da Hong Pao. This tea has been masterfully roasted about three times over the course of its aging process. The result is a completely different flavor and aroma profile with complexity and a smooth finish.
